History

You Make It. We Record It.

Chicago Dance History Project seeks to give voice to the varied and unique contributions Chicago has made to the field of dance.

We investigate, document, preserve, and promote the histories of Chicago dance, and in doing so, we strive to secure the most diverse, honest, and representational stories possible. Our digital archives also include national and global dance artists with ties to the city, surfacing lesser-known individuals and organizations that have anchored Chicago’s dance community across decades.

Our oral history collection, presented online in collaboration with the Midwest Dance Collection at Chicago’s Newberry Library, renders diverse strains of historical knowledge tangible for present and future generations.

At the heart of this mission is clear recognition and mutual support of the archival and preservation work done by other Chicago entities, thus putting collaboration, partnership, respect, and cooperation foremost in Chicago Dance History Project’s efforts.
