Valerie Jordan Darby's mother, Doris Jordan, decided that the best way to give her daughter a dance education was to teach her herself. The Doris Jordan Dance School operated from 1959 to 1985; Valerie started as a student but later became involved in the family business as her mother's assistant, teacher, and administrator.
