Hailing from Indiana, Twyla Tharp is a dancer, choreographer, and author who lives and works in New York City. In 1965 she formed the company Twyla Tharp Dance, which merged with American Ballet Theatre in 1988. She regrouped the company in 1991 and, by 2010, ABT had 20 of her works in its repertory. Tharp has since choreographed for Paris Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, Boston Ballet, Chicago's Joffrey Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.

Tharp's work draws on classical, jazz, contemporary, and popular music. Her mix of ballet and modern dance gives her work a famously distinctive style, often referred to as "crossover ballet."
